CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu BJP president and Kanyakumari MP Pon
Radhakrishnan on Thursday urged the people of the State and all
political parties to desist from criticising the new government at the
Centre for a period of six months.
Saying the government ought to be given such a time to start delivering on expectations, Radhakrishnan asked the people to continue the support they had shown in the Lok Sabha election.
“When the DMK first came to power in 1967, the great leader Kamaraj had announced that he would level no criticism against the new government for six months. He had made the announcement on the basis of political decency,” he recalled.
“In the same vein, we seek the support of the people and of all political parties not to criticise the new Central government for six months,” appealed Radhakrishnan.
He also requested the people of Tamil Nadu to give the new government a year’s time to sort out the various issues with Sri Lanka.
“It takes that long to make a difference in international relations. We cannot expect the Sri Lankan government to give up its objectives immediately,” he said.
“My first request to the new government as far as Tamil Nadu government is concerned is that the fishermen of Tamil Nadu should be able to go fishing with freedom, with an assurance that they will be able to come back home,” he said.
“As far as a national picture is concerned, I would urge the government to extend to all school students the same assistance that is being provided to children of minority communities,” Radhakrishnan added.
He also said Centre-State relations would have to improve, and that the new government was committed on this front.source:IE
