Toronto – Thousands are expected to attend the Tamil Genocide Awareness
Rally to be held at 3:00 PM this Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Dundas
Square. Tamil Canadians, an International Human Rights Scholar from the
Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal, Members of Parliament and Provincial
Parliament, and Human Rghts Activists will re-affirm the necessity for
an independent international investigation into violations of human
rights, crimes against humanity and ongoing genocide in Sri Lanka, as
well as stress the urgent need for an internationally monitored
referendum among Eelam Tamils both within and outside the island of Sri
Lanka.
According to the United Nations Panel of Experts Report on Sri Lanka, the war in Sri Lanka ended amidst the indiscriminate killing of 70,000 civilians, caused by the intentional bombings of civilian “safe zones,” designated by the Government of Sri Lanka, hospitals and humanitarian operations by the armed forces under its command. The protracted genocide of the Tamils today is carried out through a brutal military occupation, and a deliberate program of Sinhala colonization and settlement in the traditional homeland of the Eelam Tamils.
“While government sponsored settlements aim to destroy Tamil villages and livelihoods, the military occupation of the traditional homeland of the Eelam Tamils in the North and East of Sri Lanka, controls all aspects of individual, social and professional life, threatening the safety and security of Eelam Tamils, and brutally suppressing any dissent against the army occupation”, said Professor Sri Ranjan, Chairperson of the NCCT.
“Sri Lanka’s contempt for human rights and international law means the international community must apply the standards of universal justice through an independent international investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide,” states Professor Sri Ranjan. “We demand a sustainable and just political solution based on the Eelam Tamils’ inalienable right to self-determination to forestall the resurgence of another war against ongoing genocide. Only an internationally monitored referendum, in line with the precedents set in East Timor and South Sudan, will bestow basic political and human rights to enable Eelam Tamils to peacefully determine their own future in the island” he concluded.
