Malaysian govt. must support US resolution or lose Indian vote: MP

Malaysia’s ruling political party, Barisan Nasional risks losing votes from the Indian community if it fails to support the United Nations resolution on alleged human rights violations in Sri Lankan, according to Malaysian MP M. Manogaran.
Democratic Action Party’s Manogaran, along with Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul (PKR) and Senator S. Ramakrishnan (DAP), visited Sri Lanka last May to assess the humanitarian situation in the aftermath of the conflict.
The UN resolution, sponsored by the United States, France and Norway, is to be considered by the Human Rights Council (UNHCR), which has been meeting in Geneva since last week and is scheduled to end March 23.
Manogaran was quoted as saying  by Free Malaysia Today that he and other Pakatan Rakyat (opposition coalition) leaders last Friday sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Tun Razak asking him to ensure that Malaysia support the resolution.
“The Malaysian government must take into account the Malaysian Indian community’s opinion,” he said. “It must support the resolution or Barisan Nasional will be overlooked by the Indian community in the next general election.”
