Second-generation Tamil youth activists gathered outside the Sri
Lankan embassy in London on the occasion of the 66th ‘independence day
of Sri Lanka and burnt copies of the Sri Lankan constitution to assert
that the unitary structure of GoSL has only genocidal connotations for
the Tamils. The youth activists also condemned Britain’s historical role
in buttressing the SL state and denying Tamils’ their sovereignty.

Speaking to TamilNet, Thivyaa Tharan from TYO-UK Advocacy said: "Britain laid the political foundation of the genocide of the Eelam Tamil nation by creating the unitary state of Sri Lanka and overstepping Tamil claims to sovereignty. It was also complicit in the genocidal war on the Eelam Tamil nation by assisting Sri Lanka over the years. So, unless Britain acknowledges its mistakes and recognizes sovereignty of the Eelam Tamil nation, it will still be complicit in our eyes.”
The youth activists mobilized by the TYO-UK also raised slogans asserting their Eelam Tamil identity and Tamil Eelam as their homeland.
In attempts to intimidate the protestors, officials from the Sri Lankan embassy took photos of the demonstrating Tamils.
Another protest was held at 10 Downing street.
